Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Massive Evacuations Reported

The island nation was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, which left at least two people dead and displaced over a million residents.

Officials stated that the powerful weather system caused extensive flash flooding, storm surges, mudslides, and fierce gale-force winds, leading to the relocation of millions of residents nationwide.

Extensive Destruction and Emergency Operations

In Pandan, Catanduanes, one of the worst-hit regions, emergency crews documented rising waters reaching rooftop levels and residences washed out by the powerful currents.

Our team saved fourteen people stranded atop a house surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,โ€ a disaster-mitigation officer explained. โ€œA father also called in panic, saying the roof of his house was about to be ripped off due to the storm. We saved him and four relatives.โ€

By Monday, officials confirmed two fatalities: a drowning victim on the island and a second individual killed when her house collapsed in eastern Samar.

Typhoon Strength and Projected Path

The super typhoon was downgraded to a severe tropical storm early Monday as it crossed the main island, where the capital is located.

According to the state weather service, the stormโ€™s sustained wind speed decreased from 115 mph to 102 mph, though wind bursts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is projected to lose strength as it moves north toward Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The national disaster response service indicated efforts were ongoing to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Roughly 6,000 evacuation centres were activated to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

Fung-wong struck shortly following another severe storm, that claimed at least 224 people and left another 135 missing prior to advancing to Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Searches for the missing persons were halted recently over risks for rescue workers.

Global warming is causing cyclones stronger and common. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to hit the Philippines in 2025.

Researchers have found that the rate of intense cyclones striking the islands has risen doubled in the past twenty years.

Global assessments indicate that intense storms cause approximately millions in dollars in losses for the Philippines annually.

The Philippine president issued a state of emergency on Thursday due to the extensive devastation caused by the prior typhoon and the expected damage from the new storm.
